The Role of the Modern Plumber

Throughout most of history, the work of plumbers remained relatively unchanged in scope. Despite technological advances, the early 20th century plumber soldered, installed and repaired water supply pipework, working on roofs, gutters, sewers and drains in much the same way as his Roman counterpart several millennia earlier.

In the 21st century, the role of the plumber has evolved to meet the needs of the modern world with its growing health and lifestyle expectations. The work of plumbers and plumbing designers now extends beyond water supply and sanitation to encompass the supply of gas, as well as air conditioning and refrigeration.

In the 21st century, the World Plumbing Council defines plumbing as "work associated with the provision of water supply pipework including, without limitation, that used for fire-fighting; all forms of space heating; gas installations; sanitary appliances; discharge pipework and drainage; the weathering of structures and buildings."

It is worth noting, however, that in most jurisdictions the piping for heating systems is installed and maintained by pipefitters or gas fitters, although many plumbers hold additional qualifications in these fields.

Plumbing professionals are essentially involved in the application of hydraulic engineering principles to convey fluids to and from fixtures within a building or vehicle.
