Leaking Pipes
If you have a leaking pipe in your home, it is imperative that you call a plumber immediately. The water leaking can potentially cause serious damage in your home, and thus should be fixed as soon as possible. Ideally, you should completely shut off your water system, as the system is under high pressure; though this is not always possible.
If it is not possible to completely shut off the water flow, there are some steps you can take to limit damage and to try and stop the flow of water from the pipe. Any repairs which you make yourself will only be temporary, and should be seen to by a qualified plumber immediately.
If you discover a leak in your pipes, you can try one of the following methods of
stemming the flow while awaiting a plumber.
If the leak is in a threaded joint between two pipes, it should be possible to tighten the joint using a wrench. In some cases this could fix the leak; though if it doesn't, it should at least limit the leak until the joint can be looked at by a plumber.
If the leak is from a small hole in a pipe, you can try and stop the flow using a well-sharpened pencil. Poke the sharp end of the pencil into the hole, and break it off. Quickly wrap duct tape around the pipe several times.
Small holes may also be shut by using epoxy putty.
For large holes, a piece of hosepipe should be used. Slit the hose lengthways, and slide it over the pipe, clamping it in place using three clamps, at either end and in the middle of the hosepipe.
